Second semester brings fresh grades, more tests, and, most importantly, winter sports. As temperatures drop, winter sports heat up. These seasonal sports bring excellent opportunities for athletes to go outside and stay active no matter the weather.

Many middle schoolers appreciate that anyone can join the winter sports action at Blake, no matter their skill level. Most middle and high schoolers at Blake tend to stick with sports once they’ve chosen one they enjoy. Some 7th graders joining a sport can stick with it until their senior year of high school and possibly even become one of the team’s captains.

Fortunately, Blake offers many opportunities for trying different types of sports. Blake’s Winter sports include Alpine Skiing, Basketball, Fencing, Hockey, Nordic Skiing, Boy’s Swimming and Diving, and Yoga. Not only does Blake offer these sports, but some of the teams are exceptional. For example, the Bearstangs Swim and Dive have won the state championship several years in a row, and Blake Nordic Skiing has won conference championships! This year Blake’s basketball teams also rose in the state rankings.

Nora Shay, a 9th grader and alpine skier, said about the team, “It’s a fun and positive atmosphere and very welcoming to everyone.” Amelia Nannen, a 7th-grade basketball player said, “It’s fun for everyone, and even if you don’t play that much, it’s still so enjoyable.” Being part of a team at Blake can allow you to be a part of a community of people with a common interest in your sport, and help grow your school spirit!

As you can see, winter sports bring many opportunities for athletes to remain competitive, active, and healthy. They also bring excellent opportunities to get out and watch! Whether you’re playing or watching a winter sport, they offer great opportunities to mix up your winter routine and cheer for Blake.
