The Winter Musical this year, Matilda, will be performed on March 21 and 22. Mr. Geissler, who chose the show and will direct it this winter says, “I knew it was only a matter of time until we tackled Matilda at Blake. It’s a great show for student actors with great opportunities for strong characterization and physicality, high-powered choreography, and anthemic music. The recent Netflix film adaptation really reignited my interest in the piece.
“I knew I wanted this year’s musical to be a different type of challenge than last year’s tech-heavy SpongeBob. So in choosing the 2025 musical I knew I wanted to costume human characters and keep the set above sea level, at the very least. After narrowing the options down to a few, Matilda stuck out to me for its empowering message and heartfelt music by Tim Minchin. Plus, I came to realize that the last three MS musicals have all featured male protagonists, and Matilda is an undoubtedly girl-powered show.”
From a survey with 22 responses, most students are happy with Mr. Geissler’s choice. “I feel like it is a good choice because it really goes along with how everyone acts. But either way I think it is okay because it is Mr. Geissler's choice,” wrote Harper Brost, a 6th grader.
Sophia Widge, an 8th grader, wrote, “I think it's good! The story of Matilda is pretty interesting, and I'm excited to see how it translates into a musical.”
