You’ve probably heard an accent before. Everyone has one, whether you feel like it or not. How you talk, and often the phrases you say might tell someone a lot about where you are from. But how do accents form, and where do they come from?

An accent is the pronunciation difference and patterns associated with a certain dialect. Many factors play into how you speak. Where you live, economic class, cultural background, etc. When one may move around a lot, and travel, they will meet many different people with many other ways of speaking, which, after a good amount of time, will affect the person's way of speaking and accent.

Some accents are going away, however, this is because people's accents rub off on others. For example, if someone moves from New York to Georgia, their accent will change because of the people around them, however, they will also affect the accents of the people who already live there, turning it into a melting pot of accents. Sometimes, a parent and a child can have noticeably different accents, even if they grew up in the same place geographically. Everyone has different experiences in life, like meeting different people, going to school in another country, growing up somewhere and then moving to another place for work, and so many more factors. We are all shaped by our own unique experiences, the way you speak can have a very big impact on your life. People may apply stereotypes to you because of your accent and dialect, people may think that you are very intelligent because of an accent. The way you speak is one of the first things someone will notice about you, making it a very important part of your life, wether you notice or not.
