“Having the same music taste as someone is like having a new connection with someone” - TheMindsJournal. So, what do your playlists say about you?

Overall, the middle school is a pop-forward group, with a whopping 54% of the entries including either XXXXXX. Those who liked pop music were most likely to be in sports and performing arts. That being said, many people who had sports as an extracurricular, ranked genres of music other than pop as their favorite.

Rock was the most diverse of the genres. Unlike pop, there wasn’t a strong correlation between a preference for the genre and the way someone might describe themselves. When collecting data and information about the student population, they were asked to list 1-3 words to describe their personality. The results yielded little to no similarities. However, when students were asked about their extracurriculars and hobbies, most rock genre listeners mentioned creative activities.

People who identified themselves as indie music lovers were most likely to be in the performing arts. This includes musical theatre, dance etc. Additionally, these aspects flowed into their personality traits. Traits included energetic, creative, extroverted.

As for the people who described themselves as athletic people, the country genre dominated. Country is not just correlated with sports participation, it is correlated with athletic identity, which says a lot more about the student population. Over 90% of the people who listed country music as one of their favorite genres, described themselves using the word ‘athletic.’

Music taste can share a lot about someone’s personality, actively or passively. Did this data align with you?
