What Do Teachers Do During Summer?

By Georgia Doar · May 23, 2025

We see teachers almost every day from late August to early June, when we are let out for summer break. But have you ever wondered during summer break? I interviewed a couple teachers to get insight on their summer plans.

Ms. Ferguson

“I plan to assemble an outdoor bar when school gets out. I love to create and design peaceful, relaxing outdoor spaces in the summer. This year, I’m redoing our patio area with comfortable seating, a fountain, soft lighting, and lots of flowers. I look forward to warmer summer weather and time to relax and read books outside.”

Ms. Nussbaum

“My plans this summer are to stay close to home, run with my dog, swim in the Minneapolis lakes, and sew a lot! I spent a whole month traveling abroad last summer, so this summer I’m excited to stay in the Midwest and enjoy this beautiful time of year.”

Mx. Velis

“I just moved to Minneapolis last August, so I’m looking forward to a summer of enjoying the parks, restaurants, and events in the city! I also get to go on a few trips to see people I love. I’m headed to a cabin in Northern Minnesota with friends this June. Then at the end of July, I’ll head home to spend time with my family and play outside in my favorite place in the world (Northern Michigan).”

Ms. Buchanan

“Summer is great because I can relax and spend extra time on hobbies. I am starting a garden now for the summer, growing vegetables for my family. I read a lot in the summer. I spend a lot of time walking my dog. My family will also attend a week of family camp just outside Ely in July.”
