Artificial Intelligence is becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives. It’s important to know how to use it responsibly. AI is a technology that is meant to simulate the human mind. Sometimes it’s good to have intel from adults on what to think about AI. In this article you will find teachers’ opinions on AI.

Mr. Paterakis:

“I am beginning to see AI as a really powerful thought partner / tool in schools and in the sciences in particular. The use of AI when analyzing and synthesizing lots of ideas is truly incredible. But, therein lies the challenge for schools, teachers and students. Adolescent brain development requires practice, tinkering and stamina to move to higher order thinking. These skills are what AI is so good at - analyzing and synthesizing! If we only click a button and let the AI do this for us we are missing a critical piece of young, human brain development. So, I think we proceed by recognizing how powerful this tool is but proceed with caution with pretty clear parameters as to what is and what is not a best practice in schools. My larger concern is for the environmental effect data centers are having on energy and water resources around the country. The current freshwater system is already straining to keep up with current demand. Similarly, if we simply add another massively high load of demand to our current fossil fuel based grid we are ignoring our already outsized carbon output and its effect on climate change. This is where strong environmental leadership and legislation are needed in both local and federal government.”

Mr. Zelle:

“My opinion is that use of AI by students is best done with teacher permission.”, “It all depends on the assignment. AI is only going to become more and more common. Teachers learning more about it and students asking permission before using it would be the best case scenario in my opinion.”

Ms. Wagner:

“I have mixed feelings, but in general, I think that it is a new tool with the potential to be used in really fun, cool, and creative ways. Like every tool, it is our responsibility as teachers to understand the pluses and minuses and teach you, our students, how to use it appropriately.”
