As the school year turns to spring, excitement is building at Blake Middle School for the upcoming sports season. For many 7th graders, the season marks a significant milestone—the first time spring athletes can step onto the field as part of a team. After years of cheering from the sidelines, it’s now time to wear the jersey and compete alongside friends and classmates.
A Sport for Every Student
Blake Middle School offers a wide array of sports to choose from, with something for every skill level. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, there are opportunities for everyone to get involved. The school boasts a “no-cut policy,” meaning no student is excluded from participating, regardless of experience. Students have the chance to try out baseball, softball, lacrosse, golf, boys’ tennis, girls’ synchronized swimming, track and field, ultimate frisbee, and more. For some students, the options don’t stop at the middle school level. Depending on the size of the team and individual skill level, some middle school athletes even have the chance to play up for junior varsity or varsity teams.
Pre-Season Buzz
Many teams started gearing up way before the official sports season started. The Blake Synchro Team started captain’s practices in February, inviting newcomers to join in on the fun. Similarly, the Girls’ Lacrosse team kicked off their season with captain’s practices in January, participated in Winter League games, and even braved the cold to take part in the Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. Charlotte Palmby, a 12th-grade lacrosse captain, shared her excitement: “I’m really excited for this season, especially since we have the most girls signed up since I’ve been a part of the program. I’m optimistic because we have so many dedicated returning players who play year-round, and our team chemistry feels very strong.”
Upper School Mentorship
Blake’s K-12 school structure offers middle schoolers the opportunity to be mentored by older students. Sawyer Frenzel, an 8th-grader on the baseball team, is looking forward to learning from upperclassmen. “I’m most excited to get back on the field and play with older kids – and even some younger ones. It’s interesting to see how juniors from last year are stepping into leadership roles for varsity and JV. I can’t wait to catch up with teammates who go to different schools,” said Sawyer.
Lots to Look Forward To
The excitement around Blake’s spring sports is palpable, with many students eager to grow their skills and bond with new friends. Reed Jones, an 8th-grader on the track team, loves the sense of community in track: “I love track because the community is so large. Even though it’s an individual sport, you meet new people and get support from them.” For Savvy Sinchef, a 7th-grade track athlete, the competition is a major motivator. “I’m excited about running with new people from our school. I wanted to try track because I want to run with people who are faster than me and challenge myself.” Eleanor Whinnery, a 7th-grade golfer, is eager to meet her new teammates and coach. “I’m looking forward to meeting all the girls and getting to know the coach,” she shared.
The Spirit of Blake
As the spring season unfolds, students are not only focused on developing their athletic abilities but also on making new friends and experiencing the camaraderie that comes with team sports. “This softball season is going to be great, and I can’t wait for games to start!” said Lilah Mailrose, a 9th-grade softball captain. It’s not too late to join in the fun, either – late sign-ups are still welcome. So whether you’re jumping hurdles, swinging for the fences, or swimming in sync, this is the time to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and embrace Blake’s team spirit.
