It seems like singers like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter just became famous at the start of their careers, but it’s been 10 and 15 years in the making. Sabrina Carpenter started her singing career right around when she started her acting career. She starred in “Girl Meets World” on the Disney channel. Some of her earliest popular songs were “Alien” “Almost Love” and “Sue Me”. Another early popular song from her was “Thumbs”, however, it wasn’t listed on the Wikipedia page. In 2021 she released her first single “Skin” to reach the Billboard Hot 100. Her fifth album “Emails I Can’t Send”, was supported by the US Global Airplay top-10 singles “Nonsense” and “Feather”. In 2023, she opened for Taylor Swift, which is the first real boost to wide popularity. After that she released her Album “Short and Sweet” with hit songs like “Esspresso” and “Please Please Please”.

Chappel Roan also started early. When she was 17, in 2015, she uploaded an original song “Die Young” to YouTube. She was signed to Atlantic Records shortly after. In 2017 she released her Debut EP, School Nights. In 2020, her “Pink Pony Club” was her initial rise to prominence. However the same year she was dropped from Atlantic Records. Following a short break, she released a series of independent songs in 2022. Her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” was released through Island Records in 2023 and was included in several best albums of 2023 year-end lists. She used the same record label Sabrina Carpenter used for “Skin”.

Although the album created a cult following, the album didn’t become a commercial success until Chappel Roan’s stint as a supporting act for Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour, her performances at music festivals including Coachella and Governers Ball, and the success of her follow-up single, "Good Luck, Babe!". By mid-2024, the album had hit number one in Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK, and was within the top five on the U.S. Billboard 200 and Australia.

As you can see, not everyone is an overnight success. Both Sabrina Carpenter and Chappel Roan have worked longer than I’ve been alive to get to this point.
