Blake to Permanently Take Away 6th Grade Laptops After Unsuccesful Securly Trial
You thought Securly was bad, 6th graders? What’s coming next is worse. On Monday, at 5:00 P.M., Dr. Anne E. Stavney sent a message to the school about phase two of tech changes, this time, a permanent change. “Sixth-graders will no longer receive school-issued laptops,” the email read. 6th graders will turn their laptops in at the end of this week; all school-work for the rest of the year will be done on paper.
“THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING BLAKE HAS EVER DONE!” said one anonymous student. Another student, who helped to create the Securly petition, said, “I’m going to sue Blake. I’m going to tell my lawyer to sue Blake because what it's doing is illegal and it's violating my rights.”
During the implementation of Securly, several parents complained that their kids were becoming too reliant on screens. Ms. Ferguson says, “Over spring break, a group of us met and tried to find the best way forward, and we decided that the laptops were harming more than they were helping, so we made the decision to take them away permanently.
The old laptops will be sent to a processing plant, and then reused as part of Taher’s signature chili. Chef Renee mentioned that she and the rest of the Taher team are excited to use the laptops in their cooking.
