NHL: Top Players and Teams

The NHL is up and running and we are quite a ways into the season. Let’s take a look around the league at some players and teams who are standing out right now.

Winnipeg Jets: This is obvious. If you watch hockey you know that the Winnipeg Jets are the top team in the league and for good reason. The Jets are currently at 51 points in only 36 games with a record of 25-10-1 as of December 27, 2024. If they continue to win they could reach 100 points in just 70 games! The Jets have been in a slump lately going 10-9-1 over the last 20 games considering that their first 15 games ended in a record of 14-1 (The best record after 15 games in the NHL). This could affect their momentum for the rest of the year.

Matvei Michkov: Michkov is on pace to pass Connor Bedard’s rookie points record from last year. The guy has 27 points after just 33 games! If you do some math, that totals 64.25 points on the season, or just 64. Connor Bedard had a record of 61. Michkov is powering the rookie world but not just by points, he is also the rookie with the most penalty minutes. This guy fights and scores!

New Jersey Devils: The surprise killers have come up from the dead! Everyone thought that the Devils were going to have another season at the bottom of the league even though they pulled together a spot in the playoffs last year. The Devils currently sit 3rd in the league as of December 27, 2024. Jack and Luke Hughes along with the rest of the team make the Devils an interesting prospect in the upcoming playoffs.

Dylan Strome: Yes it sounds weird at first - why does a guy with only 38 points make this list? Well, Strome leads the Washington Capitals in points so far this year and the Capitals are the 4th best team in the league. Strome also had to deal with Alex Ovechkin’s injury and while Ovechkin was out, their leaders had to step up. That’s where Strome comes in. He helped to guide the team to victory while Ovechkin was injured. This earns Dylan Strome a spot on this list.
