New Year’s Eve is a major holiday in the United States. It represents setting goals, reflection, and fresh starts. People often celebrate by having dinner at their house with family and friends or by attending fancy New Year’s parties.

The ball drop in New York City is a celebration that has gotten a lot of attention around the world. The 11,875 pound ball is 12 feet in diameter, with an aluminum frame covered in 2,688 crystal triangles illuminated by 32,256 LEDs. People chant as the seconds before the clock turns to midnight, and the new year officially starts. People livestream the drop across the United States.

Many people also celebrate by creating New Year’s Resolutions, or goals people set for the coming year. Many times these are things they want to accomplish or things they want to improve on. Fireworks are a way of celebrating the new year with many people lighting backyard fireworks or going somewhere to see them. Seeing vibrant lights start the year off with fun energy.

One of the most popular traditions people do on New Year’s is eat food. There are a lot of different foods different countries believe bring luck if you eat them on new years. People in Spain and Mexico believe that eating 12 grapes at midnight brings luck for the 12 months ahead.
