Canvas: The website for all things school. We use this platform many times a day to access assignments, due dates, and grades. Canvas allows you to customize the color of each class, but that’s about all you can do style-wise.

According to a survey conducted by the Blake Bear Bugle with 155 responses, 91% of the Middle School uses the extension Better Canvas. The extension lets you add a to-do list, a notes section, a GPA calculator, and more. It lets you completely change the look of the page. With a few clicks, your Canvas page can be completely transformed.

With Better Canvas, students can access hundreds of pre-made themes to choose from. These can range from simple color schemes to impressionist paintings, to video games, and anywhere in between. If you want to make an entirely new style, Better Canvas allows you to change the font, pictures, and background colors.

Students have mixed opinions on Better Canvas. Many students support it, such as Nina Badlani, 6th grade, who writes, “I use canvas styling extensions so that it looks nice, I like the GPA feature of Better Canvas, and I love how many themes there are. I also like how you can change the colors of many things, have a task checker, and more! My opinion is that it adds your own ‘look’ to it and I think that better canvas is a great extension.”

Many students added that they use Better Canvas for the dark mode option because the normal screen is too bright or distracting. While the dark mode can be helpful, it can make it almost impossible to read some instructions if the font color and background are black.

Some students think the extension is too distracting and is hard to get used to. “I use different colors for my canvas, I don’t use any themes. I don’t think themes are a good or bad thing. But if they are very distracting (Like you can’t read your assignments because the text color is too bright or too dark, etc), then I think they can be a negative thing,” says Sabeen Siddiqui, 6th grade.
