GUTS Album Review

By Avery Fulton · November 10, 2023

In this column, I will be sharing my opinion on the new GUTS album by Olivia Rodrigo. I would love to start off by saying, this is an incredible album. It is full of amazing songs, with a mix of ballads and rock songs. I would also like to add that this is all my opinion, so feel free to disagree! I am going from least favorite to favorite. I will be sharing my bottom 2 songs, and my top 3 songs, with my final review at the end. I hope you enjoy.

12. lacy- My least favorite song in the GUTS album is lacy. This song is a skip for me because I thought that it never had a high moment besides the stretched out note towards the end of the song. I think that the lyrics of lacy are very well written, but the tune of it is just not my cup of tea.

11. Teenage Dream- I think this is a heartbreaking song. Rodrigo is expressing that she’s sorry she wasn’t her past lover's “teenage dream”. A teenage dream is what I could explain to be having a perfect significant other, so Rodrigo is saying she wasn’t always that person.

3. bad idea right?- I used to despise this song because of the lack of singing, but as soon as the rest of GUTS came out, I really started to like this song. This song is about the thought of getting back with your ex, with the main line being “seeing you tonight, it’s a bad idea right?” Another thing that made me slowly love this song was the music video, which included cameos with Madison Hu, Rodrigo’s co-star in the Disney Channel hit, Bizaardvark. It also includes the pop artist Tate McRae, who created hits like “greedy”, “she’s all i wanna be”, and “you broke me first”.

2. vampire- This song is genius. It has so many metaphors that connect to the situation. Rodrigo is talking about someone who betrayed her, and in her words “bleeding me dry like a god d*** vampire”. Some like to believe that this song is about none other than Taylor Swift, who she had a falling out with after copyright issues with her previous album SOUR.

1. making the bed- Wow. I love this song. The melody of this song is right up my alley. It has so many metaphors, as well as vampire. I think this song describes how she doesn’t want the life she has. She expresses that in the lyrics such as “I’m so tired of being the girl that I am” and “well, sometimes I feel like I don’t want to be where I am”, Which is really sad. Because most people would think, “oh she has a perfect life” but in making the bed, she’s really letting you in on the fact that her life is far from perfect.

My final grade on GUTS is an A-. GUTS shows the life of Rodrigo whether that’s her going through heartbreak or happiness. This album does have some skips for me, but overall it’s a phenomenal album. I can’t wait to hear more from Olivia Rodrigo, but for now, check out the rest of the articles and I hope you enjoy!
